Posted Date: 8th March  2015

VPS Healthcare, a leading healthcare provider with 11 operational hospitals, thousands of employees and healthcare support services spread across the MENA region, India and Europe, today opened its doors to Marina Health Promotion Centre (MHPC), which is billed as a game changer in the UAE's battle against cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Established in partnership with Seoul St. Mary's Hospital (SSMH), Korea – a premium medical care provider – the innovative concept marks its entry into the UAE and will offer comprehensive health screening packages that include early cancer detection. The Marina Health Promotion Centre is the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, which will be managed by experts from South Korea.

Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Managing Director of VPS Healthcare, said: "We are glad to have launched the Marina Health Promotion Centre. It is a validation of our emphasis on preventive medical care. The state-of-the-art center that will be run by experts also epitomizes our four-pillar approach of establishing screening centers; fielding top of the line technology and world class medical professionals, whilst also raising awareness on preventive healthcare. Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen the UAE's preventive care capabilities to raise the standard of life of the community through setting up a network of our advanced screening centers."

Centrally located in Marina Mall, the first MHPC has a team of 75 healthcare professionals, with a capacity of 25 – 50 visitors daily, depending on the screening packages. Spread over 26,500 square feet, the new concept encourages screening for early detection and prevention of diseases. The screening packages will be recommended upon consultation with physicians, who are appropriate for each patient's age, gender and risk factor.

Dr. Ali Obaid Al Ali, CEO, Abu Dhabi Hospitals, VPS Healthcare, said: "Early detection and prevention saves a lot of money as well as helps individuals to better manage chronic illnesses or even achieve total treatment by early detection of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. As part of our efforts to ensure top-quality medical care, the center has been fitted out with state-of-the-art equipment ranging from MRI, CT scan, ultrasound, echo, digital mammogram, stress treadmill, endoscopy, ECG, pulmonary function test, hearing test (ENT) and eye test, among others. We have also selected a highly skilled team of medical professionals, who will attend to patients with compassion and dignity."

The Marina Health Promotion Centre is modeled after the acclaimed Korean Medical Prevention and Screening System, which is a first for the UAE.

With the aid of breakthrough technology, expert medical professionals and multidisciplinary approach, the center will deliver seamless and effective services that could significantly raise the quality and expectancy of life.

According to the UAE Ministry of Health, cancer is the third leading cause of death in the country after cardiovascular diseases and accidents, and it accounts for nearly 500 deaths annually.

SSMH is one of the top institutes in Korea in medical academics and has established wide-ranging specialty centers to combat a multitude of cancers. It has achieved great surgical success, performing more than 430 hematopoietic stem cell transplantations for leukaemia, multiple myeloma, malignant lymphoma and other hematological disorders.

Ki-Bae Seoung, President and Professor of Cardiology, SSMH, said: "The Marina Health Promotion Center has been designed to replicate the success of our multi-disciplinary approach. We are confident that setting-up such state-of-the-art facilities will make it possible for UAE patients to quickly access treatment within their country of residence. Such accessibility will also greatly enhance the chances for early detection and full recovery."

South Korea is regarded as the hub for preventive healthcare and boasts an unparalleled medical information system. In 2014-15, South Korea ranked eighth worldwide for the effectiveness of its healthcare system, ahead of the UK, the US and Germany.
